Cycle route along smuggling trails
Ootmarsum, Vasse, Uelsen
In the past, border surveillance between the Netherlands and Germany was much stricter than today. During World War I, the number of border guards increased sharply between the neutral Netherlands and war-torn Germany. More and more trade was banned between the two countries, prompting many locals to start smuggling.
Twente offered smugglers an ideal environment in which to plot their routes. The scenic landscape, the many streams and dense forests provided excellent opportunities to cross the border unseen. Yet the risks were high: anyone caught with contraband could expect severe punishments. In the worst case, you could even be shot if the border guards considered you a threat.
Thanks to clever routes, diversions and sometimes bribing border guards, smuggling was often successful. On this cycle route, you will discover the landscape where smugglers tried to cross the border at the risk of their lives. Through the picturesque area of Het Springendal, always mindful of evading the commissars (customs officers), they ventured on this dangerous adventure.
