Cycle route along castles and houses
Wijk bij Duurstede, Driebergen-Rijsenburg, Doorn
Wijk bij Duurstede is an old fortress on the banks of the river Lek. A strategic location, which is evident from the ten castles within its municipal boundaries: Duurstede, Groenestein, Hindersteyn, Leeuwenburg, Lunenburg, Rhijnestein, Sandenburg, Walenburg, Weerdesteyn and Zuilenburg. A favourite town, therefore, for the nobility, even today: Princess Irene lives in the town for part of the year.
Driebergen-Rijsenburg has country estate Sparrenburg, while Doorn is home to Moersbergen Castle and Huis Doorn. Huis Doorn is characterised as the last residence of Kaiser Wilhelm II. Maarten Maartens, a well-known writer of the nineteenth century, had a small castle built, Zonheuvel. This was later renamed the Maarten Maartens House.
During this route, you will pass all these castles. Of course, we have added the castles you can visit as highlights on the cycle route!
