Cycle route across the Lek and through the Zouweboezem
Nieuwpoort, Schoonhoven, Ameide
During this cycle route, you will cross the river Lek and enjoy beautiful views over the water. Even before our era, the Lek seems to have originated. In the years that followed, the Lek became an increasingly active river due to the discharge of Rhine water. It is now an important link between several canals for shipping. The Lek is part of the Dutch water line. So along this river, you might just come across an imposing fort or visit an atmospheric fortified town.
Cross back across the river and discover the Zouweboezem: an important nature reserve with unusual birds such as the spotted crake, the moustache and the marsh harrier. Due to the abundance of water in the extensive ditches and reed beds, many birds find a nutrient-rich area here. The purple herons flock here mainly due to the presence of the great mudskipper.
Nature is beautiful here, but the towns you encounter along the way are also worth seeing. Learn more about the history of the fortified town of Nieuwpoort and check out the monumental farms in Leerbroek.
