A must-see cycling route
Nijmegen
Discover the oldest city in the Netherlands with a history that goes back more than 2000 years! The city was an important location for the Romans due to its strategic location at the river Waal and between the hills. The 'Face of Nijmegen' is a gigantic Roman mask that commemorates the influences of the Romans. From the Railway Bridge you can see the mask perfectly. If you cycle a little further, you will have the opportunity to visit the island Veur-Lent and see the mask up close.
The Waal bridge takes you back to the centre of Nijmegen, but before we get there, we take a turn into the beautiful nature reserve of the Ooijpolder. This used to be a swamp area, but around 1300 the first dikes were built around the area. Cycle along the old river arms and the many water pools and ponds and who knows, you might run into a Konik horse or a Galloway cattle! Special species of birds, such as the black tern and the bittern, can also be found in this area.
Enjoy the fantastic places that can be seen on this short cycle route. And this short distance is not for nothing. Because now you have time left for the unique highlight for your senses: a visit to the MuZIEum.
In this museum, you will experience what it is like to be visually impaired. With expert guides, virtual reality goggles and fun experiments, you will learn what daily life is like if you have poor vision, and discover how powerful your other senses can be...
