The current mill was built on the same spot in 1889 after a predecessor from 1721 burned down. From the embankment in 1507, excess water from the Zwartenberg polder was discharged directly into the Leurse Vaart and the river Mark. After the fire, the construction of a steam pumping station was considered, but a mill rebuild proved more financially attractive.
After 1956, wind-powered milling ceased and the mill fell into disrepair. In 1963, the mill and associated land were transferred to the municipality of Etten-Leur and restored. Therefore, the Zwartenberg Mill is the only water mill in the entire region that is still fully functional.
