Zuidlaarder Lake lies on the border of the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe. The vast lake, which covers approximately 540 hectares, is fed by the Hunze River, which enters the lake on the south side and leaves it on the north side as the Drentsche Diep. Zuidlaarder Lake is relatively shallow, with an average depth of about one metre. With over 120 hectares of surrounding shoreline, it is an important nature reserve with rich biodiversity.
You can enjoy many recreational activities in and around Zuidlaarder Lake. Water sports enthusiasts can go sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and fishing. There are various marinas along the banks, such as De Bloemert and Meerzicht on the Drenthe side, and De Rietzoom and De Leine on the Groningen side. For swimmers and sun worshippers there is a sandy beach with facilities such as playground equipment, catering establishments and ample parking.
Nature lovers will also find much to enjoy in the area. The Zuidlaarder Lake area has been designated a Natura 2000 area due to the presence of rare species such as the white-faced stern, beaver and otter. There are various walking and cycle routes that lead through swamp areas, grasslands and past bird watching huts. This allows you to discover the rich flora and fauna in peace.
