The Zouweboezem nature reserve is unknown to many people, which makes it a beautiful and peaceful piece of nature. This area was dug out to catch the excess water from the polder. In this polder, vast reed beds were created, which were gratefully used by reed farmers to cover the roofs of farmhouses with reeds.
The Zouweboezem is a fantastic place for bird spotters because the marshland is home to many species of birds. Think of the black tern, spotted crake, cetti's warbler, moustache and marsh harrier. Between the reeds in the swamp lives the largest breeding colony of the purple heron in the Netherlands.
The Zouweboezem with the De Zouwe duck decoy next to it, Het Hoenderwiel and the Achthoven polder belong together. From the various vantage points, you have a beautiful view of the grassland, water and reed areas that together create a varied nature area. Walk over the duckboard through the reed and marshland and you are very likely to see the birds that live there from close by.
