Rijksmonument de Zijlpoort dates from 1667 and was built in classicist style. The gate takes its name from the nearby little river Zijl. The gate's predecessor stood at the end of Haarlemmerstraat, where Havenplein is now located.
Because the gate had to connect to both the city wall and the bridge, from above it has the shape of a parallelogram. The sculpture on the facade, created by Rombout Verhulst, echoes the symbols of power, war and government. The gate provided shelter to rederijkers, a school for the poor and the city's supplies, among others.
Along the Zijlpoort, the Old Rhine flows into the city of Leiden.
