The Zeist Castle has an impressive history, which can be traced back to the House of Orange. The formal gardens of Zeist Castle date from 1677-1686. In this garden, a five-kilometre-long line of sight has been created. The architect was Willem A. van Nassau-Odijk, whose grandfather was Stadholder Maurice of Orange.
Many country estates owe their existence to initiatives by wealthy citizens. Zeist Castle, however, was the initiative of a nobleman who, partly because of his family ties to King Stadholder Willem III, felt the need for a different, richer form of representation. This need is amply expressed in Zeist Castle.
