This building on Langebrug 89 housed the studio of Rembrandt's first teacher Jacob Isaacsz. van Swanenburgh, who was himself known for his painted portraits, historical scenes and especially religious scenes. Rembrandt learnt drawing, etching and painting here between 1621 and 1623, after which he temporarily left for Amsterdam to be apprenticed to history painter Pieter Lastman.
Today, this the tall 17th-century building houses the Young Rembrandt Studio. Among other things, you can watch a ‘video mapping’ projection about the life of the young Rembrandt and the most important people in his life, and it tells about his talent and the special materials the young painter used.
