The Wouda Pumping Station is the largest working steam pumping station in the world. From far and wide you can see the sixty-metre-long chimney showing off. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998.
When the water is high, it still ensures dry feet for the Frisians. Queen Wilhelmina opened the Ir. D.F. Wouda Steam Pumping Station in 1920 and it is owned by Wetterskip Fryslân. Next to the pumping station you will find the modern visitor centre. It tells the story of Frisian water management and explains how the steam pumping station works. But you will also learn about the consequences of climate change and why the pumping station has been recognised by UNESCO.
Download the free Woudagemaal 360° app and experience this magisterial steam pumping station in virtual reality! Experience how steam technology works and why controlling the water in Friesland and worldwide is so necessary.
