Schokland and Surroundings have been a UNESCO World Heritage since 1995 and is the only archaeological monument in the Netherlands on this prestigious list. And rightly so, because this island on dry land has many secrets and beautiful mineral treasures. Schokland was an island in the former turbulent Zuiderzee and has been inhabited from the prehistory until the eviction in 1859. In that year the danger of flooding became too high, and the Schokkers had to leave their island. Since the reclamation of the Noordoostpolder in 1942, Schokland has been part of the mainland.

Discover more than 10,000 years of history at Museum Schokland. The museum's location is at the Middelbuurt, one of the three medieval residential villages on the former island of Schokland. The museum also includes the historic museum church from 1834, it's a beautiful place to get married. And in winter you can enjoy top level classical concerts here. Did you know that you can also spend the night at Schokland? Take a look at the website for activities and overnight stays at this historic part of the Netherlands.
