During a tour through Warmond, various replicas of the works of Jan Steen (Leiden 1626 - 1679) can be seen. At the junction Dorpsstraat - Postdam, for example, you will find ‘De Rederijkers’. Rederijkers were amateur poets and recitalists who met in the rederijkers' chambers to write poetry and recite.
Warmond also had its own rederijkerskamer Het Roode Madeliefje. It is not known whether Jan Steen was part of it, but he made several paintings with that subject.
Other paintings you may come across when cycling through Warmond are: Kermis te Warmond, Doctors Visit, Merry Company, The Oyster Eater and The Hoenderhof.
Characteristic of Jan Steen's works is that they usually contain one or more messages, the scene is often chaotic and very often you will see the selfie master himself depicted somewhere in the painting. There is a dose of humour in each of his paintings and often proverbs are hidden in them. How many can you find?
Jan Steen, the Leiden contemporary of Rembrandt van Rijn, lived with his family in Warmond for several years.
