Before the area around De Rijp was reclaimed (between 1612 and 1643), the cosy North Holland town was located at a connection to open water. It was known for its herring fishing, whaling and seafaring, with which the village amassed great wealth. Later, De Rijp became famous for the reclamation works, in which Jan Adriaanszoon Leeghwater, born in De Rijp, played a role.

In Museum ‘t Houten Huis, this multifaceted history comes to life. The permanent collection shows how whaling, shipping and reclamation shaped the village. Leeghwater's study has been recreated there, complete with a copy of his Haarlemmermeerboeck (1641). You can also take a look in a reconstructed room of a whaler, where you can discover how these sailors lived. The museum also offers changing exhibitions, each time highlighting a different aspect of De Rijp's rich history.

Museum ‘t Houten Huis is the place to discover the past of De Rijp and the Land of Leeghwater.
