With so many hamlets close to each other, the likelihood of conflicts between them increases. Due to a lack of natural boundaries in the open landscape, defining boundaries between hamlets was not always easy. Stones were sometimes used as boundaries, but these could, with a little effort, easily be moved by another hamlet. This regularly led to quarrels.
You are now standing on the border between the hamlets of Ommen and Varsen. The information board explains how, in 1418, the bishop of Utrecht ordered a commission to redraw the border between the hamlets of Ommen and Varsen.
