In 1832, Bernier Lucas Homan took the initiative to build a mill in Gieten. The town council did not object to the site where Homan thought to build the mill. In 1833, the mill was commissioned. The mill remained in the possession of the Homan family until 1947. By 1936, the mill was out of use and the scaffolding was removed, but in 1949, the mill was put back into use after a restoration.
Mill Hazewind only got its current name, after a restoration in 1964, in the year 1965. A competition had been held for this purpose by the regional newspaper Het Nieuwsblad van het Noorden. The mill is one of the oldest existing corn mills in Drenthe.
