Proudly situated on the Waalbandijk in Haaften, Molen De Blauwe Reiger is a beautiful corn mill with a rich history. Built in 1856, this round, masonry scaffold mill replaced its predecessor which was destroyed by fire a year earlier. The mill, with its traditional old Dutch sails, grinds grain for fodder on a voluntary basis and is known for its impressive appearance. It was restored in 1955 to regain grinding capability, and has been listed as a national monument since 1971. Visitors are welcome to explore this historic site on Saturdays.
Together with the Protestant church and Goudenstein Castle, De Blauwe Reiger forms a characteristic image in the skyline of Haaften. Thanks to its location in a bulge of the Waalband dike, the mill can be seen from afar, for example from the dikes in Waardenburg and Herwijnen, or even from across the Waal. The recent renewal of the blades in 2010 by the firm Vaags contributes to the preservation of this iconic mill, which still proudly graces the horizon of Haaften.
