The Wijkse Poort in Heusden was an important gateway to the fortified town and was part of the Zuiderwaterlinie defence system. Located on the western side of Heusden, this gate provided access for travellers and traders, but also served as a strategic defence point against enemy incursions. The Wijkse Poort was part of Heusden's impressive fortifications, complete with bastions, moats and other gates. In times of war, the gate could be locked and protected by soldiers to keep the city safe. Today, the gate is a striking historical monument and a reminder of Heusden's rich military past. Visitors can experience the power of the former fortified town there and enjoy the surrounding historical landscape.
