The wheat mill De Goede Hoop in Mijnsheerenland is a beautifully preserved national monument with a history dating back to 1649. The current round stone ground-sail model was built in 1749 to replace an old seesaw corn mill. The mill has remained remarkably authentic, without modern modifications such as electrical installations. As a result, you can take a look at historical milling techniques and unusual constructions, such as the star wheel in the beam.
Over the centuries, the mill changed hands regularly. After a period when the mill served mainly as storage, it was sold to the municipality of Mijnsheerenland in 1958. Since 1992, the mill has been managed by the Stichting Molens Hoeksche Waard. In recent decades, The Good Hope underwent several restorations, including a large-scale refurbishment in 2017 and 2018. This involved repairing the rods, floors, steps and rotating parts, and giving the mill a new paint job and plastering. Thanks to these efforts, the mill is fully preserved and back in top condition.
In 2023, the grinding function of De Goede Hoop was reactivated after successful funding from donations, a bequest and municipal support. Today, the mill is open to the public on two Saturdays a month, as well as when the banner is hanging and/or the white sign is outside. There is also a mill shop selling flour and spices, among other things.
