Westland is known as the glasshouse horticultural region of the Netherlands. Its coastal location means winter temperatures are relatively high and night frosts are rare - ideal conditions for horticulture. Its location between large cities, favourable water management and a good (water) road network enabled the area to become an important supplier of fruit and vegetables as early as the seventeenth century.
You can learn all about the history of Westland growing in the Westlands Museum in the middle of this productive region. The museum contains an information centre, an exhibition room with permanent and changing exhibitions, a play loft and a historical garden. In the garden, you can wander among flowers, vegetables and fruit trees. There is an herb corner, an old grape greenhouse and a real fruit wall.
This museum is a must on your cycle route through Het Westland, if you are curious about the development of horticulture since 1700.
