Westhove Castle is an impressive Zeeland castle, beautifully located between Oostkapelle and Domburg, on the edge of the forest and dune area De Manteling van Walcheren. This former moated castle dates from the 13th century and forms an atmospheric stop during a cycling trip through nature and history.
Westhove was first mentioned in 1277 and was for a long time owned by the abbey of Middelburg. Over the centuries it grew into an important country residence for noble and ecclesiastical rulers. During the Eighty Years’ War, the castle was largely destroyed by fire in 1572, but later rebuilt.
Over the years, the castle received illustrious guests, including Floris V, Charles the Bold, Emperor Charles V and Stadtholder William V. From the original medieval castle, parts of the corner towers have been preserved. Today, Westhove is a national monument. In the castle garden there is a replica of a medieval motte and bailey castle, nice to take a closer look at.
The castle complex is used as a Stayokay hotel. In the former orangery you will find Museum Terra Maris, a museum about the nature, landscape and culture of Zeeland.
