Waterdunen near Breskens is a unique nature reserve where tidal nature and recreation meet. The area was created as part of a coastal reinforcement project and combines water management, nature development and tourism. Thanks to a clever design, salt water from the Westerschelde flows in and out of the area in a controlled manner, creating a dynamic landscape with creeks, salt marshes and mud flats.
Waterdunen is best known as a paradise for birds. Thanks to the brackish water and varied vegetation, many bird species find food and tranquillity here. Scattered throughout the area are several bird watching huts, where you can spot waders, ducks and sometimes even rarer species.
