The 33-metre-high watchtower at the Krammer Locks was built in 1985 as part of the Delta Plan. It stands exactly on the border between fresh and salt water. In 2021, the tower received a major renovation, with the designer collective Wallstories creating a new design. The theme of this design is ecology. The old metal banisters were replaced by open, graphic panels made of aluminium. These panels tell a visual story about nature in the area. You can see more than 50 animal species, from fish to birds, as you walk up. This way, visitors learn about the area's rich biodiversity.
From the viewing platform you have a great view of the area. You can see the Krammer Locks, wind turbines and several lakes, such as the Volkerak and the Krammer. On clear days, you can even see the skyline of Rotterdam and Antwerp. The tower is right on the dividing line between fresh and salt water, giving you a good view of how the locks work. Every year, 90,000 ships pass through the locks, which ensure safe passage. These locks are also important for fish, allowing them to move between fresh and salt water.
