Are you cycling through Drents-Friese Wold National Park and does your cycle route pass by Aekingerzand? Then swap your bike for the cart and climb the watchtower of the Aekingerzand. In popular speech, they also call this vast shifting sand area 'The Barren Dunes'. Why that is is obvious when you are on the sandy plain.
The wind has free rein and makes the sand drift in different directions. In this way, the area is constantly changing, which is clearly visible when you climb the watchtower more often. The area is grazed by large herbivores, in this particular stretch by Salers. If you go cycling on a quiet day, you might just run into one of these impressive red cattle.
