The port of Oudenbosch was home to several sugar factories. Jean Gustave Rivière de Verninas, born in Bordeaux, owned the Nederlandsche Beetwortelsuikerfabriek N.V. in Oudenbosch together with Sebastiaan Dudok van Heel, from Amsterdam.
In 1870, Rivière commissioned the construction of Villa Sancta Maria, accompanied by a park in English landscape style. After completion, the owner occupied the villa only briefly and, after several changes, the friars of Saint Louis became owners of the property. By now, all properties on the property belong to the Oudenbosch municipality and the villa sometimes hosts public living room concerts.
