It is worth parking your bike at junction 27 and climbing the stairs to the viewpoint over De Slufter. This salt marsh landscape on the north-west coast of Texel is a Nature reserve unique to the Netherlands.
The influence of the tides has created a network of gullies and waterways, regularly flooded by salt or brackish seawater, usually during spring tides. The landscape is characterised by salt-loving vegetation such as sea lavender and glasswort and attracts numerous species of birds and other animals.
During an afternoon of birdwatching, you could easily spot a spoonbill, short-eared owl, egret or curlew stilts. The view from this viewpoint is undoubtedly breathtaking!
