A good way along the Texel Bird Boulevard, you come to De Schorren, a typical salt marsh landscape and one of the richest bird areas on Texel. This special nature reserve is managed by Natuurmonumenten.
Shorebirds use De Schorren as a high-tide refuge: they rest here at high tide after feeding on the mud flats between Texel and Vlieland. They gather close together along the marsh edges, while curlews and gulls sometimes move to the meadows behind. Especially in spring and autumn, it is busy here with migratory birds such as oystercatchers, black-tailed godwits, knots and redshanks.
Find a spot on the dike and enjoy the impressive spectacle during high tide: waders swooping in looking for a safe resting place. Ducks and spoonbills also rest here. A spoonbill colony has been breeding on De Schorren since 1982. These birds, which mainly eat shrimps, are protected from extremely high tides with specially constructed dams.
