At the Volkerak locks near the fortified town of Willemstad, there is a watchtower offering a unique perspective of Europe's largest and busiest inland navigation lock complex. From this freely accessible tower, you can watch the impressive workings of the locks, sluices and the recreational yacht lock as ships sail from Volkerak to Hollandsch Diep and vice versa.
The lock complex, built between 1957 and 1967 as part of the Delta Works, separates the Hollandsch Diep from the Volkerak and protects southern Zeeland from high water. Nearly 150,000 cargo ships and countless pleasure boats pass through these locks every year.
