On the third Friday of July, the Sint Annastraat serves as the setting for the entry of the last stage of the Nijmegen Four Days Marches. The street then turns into the Via Gladiola for once a year. Here the participants realise that it is almost over: they are going to complete the Four Days Marches!
After a final, long march south of Nijmegen, the walkers return to the city from that direction at the end of the day. After one last hill, they start on the Sint-Annastraat. On this long street, they soon end up in a total madhouse. About a hundred thousand people are ready for a hero's welcome. Along the street are stands, stages with performances and, above all, lots of family, friends and loved ones.
Since 1983, Sint-Annastraat has borne the name ‘Via Gladiola’ on the last day. The gladiolus, a flower, has been known since Roman times as a symbol of victory and strength. Totally weary walkers face the crowd and traditionally receive bunches of these flowers here from acquaintances and strangers alike.
Here, on the Via Gladiola, it really hits home: the gruelling adventure is all but over!
