Veere's colourful fishing fleet was a source of inspiration for many artists. Every day, the fleet sailed up the Veerse Gat from the sea. The scene was so popular to paint that an artists' colony also developed in Veere.
Jan Toorop was also inspired by the ships. In 1907, he created the painting The Veere Fishing Fleet. The painting with soft colours shows several ships sailing towards the fortified town of Veere. In the background is Noord-Beveland. It is assumed that the spot where Toorop painted was slightly more towards Domburg.
Could it have been here? Until 1961, the Veere Hole Dam did not exist and this was the point where the fishing fleet left the open sea.
Jan Toorop (1858-1928) brought many artists to Domburg. The slightly older leading artist was the centre of the art scene in Domburg. In Zeeland, he was particularly inspired by the people and their work on land and at sea.
