On 2 October 1883, Vincent van Gogh moved into this house, which used to be called Logement Scholte. He had travelled from Hoogeveen on a train barge, a journey that took no less than six hours. The lodge was also the ferry house, where ferries and barges moored right outside the door.
Vincent was happy with the room he was assigned. He wrote to his brother that he had a room with good light and a private balcony, which was a luxury for that time and environment.
Van Gogh wanted to visit the 'neighbourhood with the big old plaggenkeeten' in Drenthe. Here he found new inspiration for his paintings. "Drenthe inspires me to a lifetime of painting. Here in Drenthe I have found my destination," reads one of his quotes. He also often wrote letters to his brother, whom he tried to persuade by post to come to Drenthe as well.
