The Van Abbe Museum was founded by Henri van Abbe. He was a cigar manufacturer in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, for which he owned a number of factories in Eindhoven. But he was also a fanatical art collector. He collected mainly modern art. In the 1930s, he decided to exhibit part of his collection, for which he had his museum built.
The collection then consisted mainly of works of art that Van Abbe had bought himself. Meanwhile, the collection has been expanded with works by artists from all over the world. El Lissitzky, Chagall, Picasso, Kandinsky, Beuys, Kokoschka, Robert Morris, Mondriaan and more: you will find them all in the Van Abbemuseum. Besides paintings and sculptures, there are also video works and installations to be admired.
