Uitgeester Lake seems balanced on the surface, but underwater there is room for improvement. This is because the bottom of both the Alkmaarder Lake and the Uitgeester Lake is very flat. Limited water depth inhibits biodiversity.
The water in the lakes has become increasingly clearer in recent years thanks to quagga mussels - which filter the water - and earlier soil deepening. This allows the sun to reach the bottom, so plants grow faster. This sounds positive, yet excessive aquatic plant growth disturbs the balance between nature and recreation.
The Recreation Board mows the plants in summer, but that is not a sustainable solution. Further deepening of the lake to different depths can increase nature value and enhance biodiversity. These modifications will not only benefit nature, but also improve water quality for swimming locations around the lake.
