The mill was built in 1868 for Antonie Josephus Lubberts Nieland, who bought the remains of the burnt-down predecessor that same year. Above the entrance is a sandstone keystone with the inscription: A.J.L.N. 1868. This octagonal smock mill, a combination of a flour mill and a grist mill, stands on the west side of the Zijldiep near the village of Ganzedijk in East Groningen.
Groningen has long been known for its peeling mills, which require extra power and a free wind catch due to the energy-intensive peeling process. This process removes the husk from the barley, a process that for a long time threatened to disappear because barley was being eaten less and less. To preserve this heritage, the De Groninger Molen Foundation started a special peeling project, which resulted in the book De Groninger Pelmolen (The Groningen Peeling Mill).
