The Turfcentrale in Veendam is a special industrial monument that recalls the time when peat was the fuel of the Netherlands. This old power plant was used to generate power from dried peat, a method that was widely used in the first half of the 20th century. Peat was delivered by boats, which unloaded the fuel on the quay in front of the power station.
In 1901, the Turfcentrale was completed for ENEM (Eerste Nederlandse Energie Maatschappij), after which it was taken over by N.V. Electriciteits Maatschappij De Veenkoloniën in 1905. The letters E.M.V. were written on the roof to identify the building.
The power plant has not been in use for ages, but the building is still there. Since 2024, the building has been managed by the Turfcentrale Foundation and has been transformed into a creative breeding ground for art and cultural activities.
