The Tsar Peter House (1632) is one of the oldest wooden houses in the Netherlands. It is also the second oldest museum after the Teylers Museum in Haarlem. And it was in this workers house that the Russian Tsar Peter the Great stayed.
He came to Zaandam in 1697, then the world centre of shipbuilding, to learn the trade of ship carpenter. A beautiful dome has been built over the ancient house. In this small museum, you will find countless reminders of the Tsar's stay.
Over the years, various influential people have visited the cottage, including Russian tsars, Dutch princes and Napoleon. The many names written and carved in the windows and wooden walls are reminders of this. If you look carefully, you will also see the name of the Dutch King Willem-Alexander.
