This trench, which has been rebuilt, was part of the Grebbelinie. In earlier centuries, the Grebbelinie formed an important part of the defence of the Netherlands. Through this line, large parts of the valley between the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and the Veluwe could be flooded. This delayed an enemy attack.
Soldiers could move into it more easily and attack the enemy. In 1939, soldiers were trained here en masse in case Germany invaded, which happened a year later. In honour of 60 years of liberation, in 2005, the trench was restored. Anyone cycling south towards Veenendaal will also come across some bunkers from the line.
