Serooskerke was there early on when it came to a smithy in the village: the village had a blacksmith as early as the end of the 18th century. Marinus Polderman was the last blacksmith. He operated there from 1928, when he took over the smithy from Jacob Jan Pieterse at the age of 21, until 1974. He was a true craftsman, known as an expert gunsmith.
During Marinus's time as a blacksmith, the mechanisation of agriculture also took off. Fewer and fewer farmers still needed draft horses. The result was also less and less work for the blacksmith. And so many travaljes disappeared from the Zeeland street scene, including the one in Serooskerke.
In 2014, a new travalje was unveiled and put into use, based on the design of the travalje in Noordgouwe. On one of the pillars is a commemorative plaque by Marinus Polderman. During the Open Monument Days in September, a number of horses are shod in the travalje in the traditional way.
