Deventer is home to the Toy Museum, with the largest public collection of toys in the whole of the Netherlands. This impressive collection consists of more than 14,000 items, all from the Netherlands. The toys range from unusual dolls and dollhouses, trains, various types of mechanical and optical toys to board games and games. The most valuable pieces are displayed in two atmospheric merchant houses from the Hanseatic era.
The museum will be completely remodelled and renovated in 2021, allowing it to welcome even more visitors. Unlike traditional museums, there are no large halls and corridors filled with works of art and other collections. Instead, there are intimate rooms in two listed buildings. The authentic atmosphere of the late medieval warehouses has been preserved as much as possible to show off the historical toys to their best advantage. The presentation of the collection focuses on various social themes, such as wealth development, gender and technology.
When you visit the museum, you will discover that toys are not only entertaining, but also tell a lot about ourselves. It shows how our society has developed.
