Until the Afsluitdijk closed off the Zuiderzee in 1932, dykes frequently broke through. That is why farmers built the Waterland Sea dyke, but the peaty subsoil made the dyke unstable. The struggle against the water has left its traces in the meandering shape of the dyke. Lovely to cycle over, though.
