In 1998, oncology nurse Mart Martens, at Paardestraat in Sittard, started the first drop-in house for cancer patients and their family and friends. Since then, they have been welcomed for support and care in a non-clinical setting at more than eighty locations. Mart asked city fellow Toon Hermans if he would like to attach his name to this initiative. Toon, who lost his beloved wife Rietje to the disease, gladly agreed.
On 18 June 1998, the connoisseur, poet and artist officially opened the first Toon Hermans House. A statue of Toon stands in the rose garden belonging to the house and a drawing by him is displayed on the side wall of the building.
