Tiny Forest Gooikerspark is a dense mini forest the size of a tennis court, with as many as 30 different native tree species. This small forest provides a home for various animals such as butterflies, birds, bees and small mammals. Soil animals and mushrooms also play a role in the ecosystem by clearing forest debris. For people, it is a place to play and learn about nature. Children from the neighbourhood, the ‘Wild Guards’, protect and care for the forest.

The Tiny Forest in Gooikerspark was built according to the 100% organic method of Japanese professors Shubhendu Sharma and Akira Miyawaki. This method ensures that the forest is dense and species-rich within 10 years, much more so than traditional forest plantings. These urban forests are important because trees retain water, provide cooling, and purify the air by storing CO2, contributing to a better climate and a healthier living environment.

IVN is the initiator of the Tiny Forest concept and has created similar forests in several places around the country. The aim is not only to create more greenery in urban areas and increase biodiversity, but also to strengthen the involvement of local residents and schools in nature. This contributes to achieving climate goals and promoting a greener living environment.
