The Zwin - Cadzand-Bad

N 51.364458 / E 3.371071

The Zwin is a very lively nature reserve, where the sea water flows in every high tide period. The salt water ensures the growth of unique plant species. You will also find all kinds of animal species here, especially many bird species.

Het Zwin was created by storm surges from the North Sea. The water penetrated the land and it grew into a river. The river made a connection between the sea and Bruges, so the city soon became a major trading town. Ships came in through the Zwin.

When the Zwin began to silt up in the 14th century, it became a lot harder for ships to get to Bruges. By the 16th century, the area was largely inaccessible and Bruges lost its status as a trading city.
