You can still see that Leerdam used to be a fortress town on the beautiful Zuidwal with its mouse towers. Until 1870, Leerdam was completely surrounded by a canal, a wall and a city wall. Nowadays, only the Zuidwal is still standing with its characteristic mouse towers.
The mouse towers are small tower houses built in 1738, and they are still in use or inhabited! In the first tower, for example, a charming coffee and tea house resides.
