During World War I, the Achelse Kluis formed the border between war and peace. While Belgium was occupied by the Germans, the Netherlands remained neutral. To prevent spies, resistance fighters, smugglers and refugees from crossing the border unseen, a 332-kilometre-long wire fence was built along the border. This barricade even crossed the garden of the Achelse Kluis. With a voltage of two thousand volts, the barrier was known as 'The Wire of Death'.
A reconstruction of 'D'n Droad' tells the story of the tragic events that took place at this spot during the war years. As a tribute to the victims of the Death Wire, white crocuses have been planted along the entire 350-kilometre border, symbolising remembrance and peace.
