After the standard mill on the IJsselkade in Doetinchem was destroyed by fire in 1850, it was replaced by the current tower mill. While the original runner mill was used for grinding oak bark, eek, for tanning leather, the current mill is a corn mill. Until 1908, wheat was actually ground into flour here.
In 1961, the mill was saved from demolition by Doetinchem residents. Since then, the mill has been run by volunteers. The round mill is built with bricks and has a wooden scaffold from which the sails are operated.
A fun fact is that the subsidy the mill receives depends on the number of revolutions it makes. As much as 0.05 cents the Doetinchem Windmills Foundation receives per revolution. To measure this, there is a meter on the roof, with an old marble, which taps a counter every time the mill makes a revolution.
The city mill does its bit for any revelry in the city by being decorated with flags or party lights on special occasions.
