Het Volmerinck has a long history with many different owners. It is first mentioned in 1334 and at that time it was owned by the bishop of Utrecht. Later, it was owned by the Count of Bentheim (Germany) and the steward Van Beverforde of Twente, among others. In 1473, it came into the possession of Johan Volmerinck and his wife; it has carried their name ever since.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, the farm functioned as a ‘shelter church’ for the Catholic faithful from Tubbergen. Catholics were not allowed to practise their faith in the Netherlands according to the laws of the time, so they fled to places like this or, in the case of eastern Twente, to Catholic churches across the border in Germany.
The old buildings were restored in authentic style by the then residents in 2006.
