The fortified town of Klundert is home to a unique historical structure: De Stenen Poppen (The Stone Dolls). This brick dam, constructed in 1583 by order of William of Orange, was part of the town's defences. The dam served to separate the fresh water of the moat from the salt water of nearby waterways. On top of the dam is a pointed ridge, called the ‘donkey's back’, topped with stone figures known as ‘monks’ or ‘puppets’. This construction made it virtually impossible for enemies to cross the moat.
Today, The Stone Dolls are a fascinating sight. The area around the dam has recently been refurbished to make it more attractive. New footpaths have been created, a viewing platform built and picnic benches, bicycle stands and information boards installed. These facilities make it possible to discover the historical significance of the monument and enjoy Klundert's green ramparts.
