De Slufter is a unique nature reserve on Texel, located on the north-western coast between the Eierlandse Dunes and Texel Dunes National Park. It is the only area in the Netherlands where the sea has free play and can flow directly into the land. This has created a dynamic creek system, a network of gullies and watercourses that constantly changes under the influence of the tide. This system was created after the line of dunes, which originally separated the North Sea from the hinterland, broke through during storms.
The saline environment creates unusual flora, such as glasswort, sea lavender and saltmarsh. This attracts various bird species, including avocets, sandpipers and spoonbills. The little egret is also regularly spotted here. Marine animals such as crabs, shrimps and flatfish live in the Slufter channel.
Management of the Slufter focuses on preserving this natural, dynamic landscape. Natuurmonumenten largely lets nature take its course, while ensuring accessibility and protection of vulnerable flora and fauna.
