In the Alkmaarder and Uitgeestermeer lake lies a special place called the Saskerlei. This piece of land has existed since before the drainage of the Schermer and Heerhugowaard in the 17th century. Today, the Saskerlei is the last piece of peatland in the lake, with unique natural features such as salty peat soil and sea clay, making it an ideal habitat for various plants and animals.
However, wave action threatens to quickly wash away the Saskerlei, resulting in the loss of precious flora. To prevent this and improve nature, a large reed field with water creek will be created, which is of great importance for both nature and cultural history.
This new nature reserve will not only serve as a refuge for marsh plants and animals, but will also help protect the Saskerlei from wave action. A half ring dyke, lined with granite, will be constructed to reinforce the edge of the reed bed. This will provide a safe haven for various animal species, and the creek will serve as a nursery for fish, toads and frogs. Thus, the Saskerlei will be preserved as a paradise for both plants and animals.
